“Toward the One …” begins The Invocation of “The Only Being,” written by Hazrat Inayat Khan. It is further stated that The Only Being is united with all the illuminated souls. According to this statement, attaining the state of “illumination” brings a person into unity consciousness with The One Being. How could that be accomplished?
The concept of “One Being” defies our sensory experience of the existence of many separate individuals. While we can easily see and feel the boundaries of distinct physical bodies, there must be some other reality that is not distinct. Quantum physics tells us that physical particles are interchangeable with non-physical waves of energy. Those waves overlap and interact with other waves in the same space. How can we maintain our individuality in this mess?
A friend said, “I believe in oneness; God is all good.” No, that’s not what oneness means. The One Being includes all that’s good and all that’s not-good: everything and everyone. But how could that be? Good and evil are opposites; how could the two be included in one?
Join us for a lively discussion and the answer to this quandary. Modern science is very helpful here, but the final answer comes through meditation. We will practice the authentic methods of mystics from different traditions to create the direct experience of One Being.
