Mystical Inner Powers for an Authentic New Year
Led by Puran & Susanna Bair and Farrah & Orion Tobey
What happens when you are raised in a family of Sufi leaders spreading the wisdom of mysticism and meditation throughout the west at the turn of the 20th century, but during your young adult years, two world wars break out?
AND, you are a woman, who was not offered a leadership position in the family’s spiritual Order.
At our 2025 New Year’s Retreat, Exploring Mystical Freedom, we will use the inspiration of Noor-un-Nisa Inayat Khan, sister of Vilayat Inayat Khan, from whom our school’s teachings come, and daughter of Inayat Khan, the first sage to bring Sufism to the west, to explore ‘freedom.’
As a decorated spy veteran of WWII, featured in the 2019 movie, “A Call to Spy,” Noor-un-Nisa Inayat Khan, despite being a woman, found a way to build upon her mystical skills and pacifist beliefs to have the courage to work in secret against the Nazi regime in occupied France, attempt prison escape, protect Allies’ secrets and prepare for the ultimate sacrifice, facing death in the Dachau Concentration Camp.
What qualities must be developed in the heart to choose this dangerous path as the most authentic expression of self? By being grounded in the heart, Noor-un-Nisa had the quality of mystical freedom to lead the way.
Our sharings and meditations in this retreat will dive into the roots of mysticism as they relate to freedom, exploring concepts such as the limitations of identity, freedom through the examination of our desires, and ecstatic spiritual practice as a method for experiencing freedom. The retreat will help you define your path in the new year and bring you closer to your heart and your mystical freedom.
“When once the inner sense has broken the walls around it, it breathes the freedom and happiness which is the soul’s own property, and which the soul then attains. Every step forward gives you a certain amount of freedom of action, and as you go further and further on the path of truth, the freedom becomes greater at every step.” – Hazrat Inayat Khan
